About the Book

Jeb and his younger brother Dave are drifting apart. Growing up, they shared secrets, pranks, and friendship; but during this drought-stricken summer, new tensions are setting them at odds. A sports star and a good student, Jeb has learned to coexist with their domineering father. But Dave, unable to compromise with what he sees as a hypocritical society and family, is becoming increasingly alienated and rebellious.

With the summer heating up, Dave plans his most ambitious prank yet – the perfect way to cool down the town. But will Jeb join him one last time? Now Jeb faces the most difficult decision of his life – whether to join Dave’s reckless stunt or to abandon his brother to his anger. Jeb knows that whatever happens, both of them will share the consequences of their choices.

Endorsements

Why is one sibling resilient, while the other breaks like the branch of an apple tree, unable ‘to carry the burden of the fruit it bears’? … Played out in sweeping gestures, Harlan’s response to the question is open-ended but richly textured.

Publishers Weekly

The novel’s strengths lie in the complex, loving relationships between the three brothers and in the depiction of the domineering father… An honest family story of male bonding and vulnerability that dramatizes what it means to love someone ‘like a brother.’

Booklist

This is a strong family story with a well-developed plot and good characterization.

The Longview News-Journal: Gushers and Dusters

Watershed is an excellent book (it makes you think) and well-written (I was never bored reading it). It should be read by teenagers and adults.
